The Tamang Heritage Trekking is a newly opened off the beaten track trekking route, in a beautiful area steeped in Tibetan tradition. This is an excellent introduction to trekking in Nepal as it offers some of the most beautiful scenery in Nepal and is rich in Tamang culture. The trail is located between Langtang and the Ganesh Himal and is a relatively gentle circuit trek through terraced fields, peaceful valleys, and picturesque villages. The area is inhabited by the Tamang people who are some of the warmest and friendliest in Nepal.  Most of the Tamang people originate from Tibet as this area was on the salt and mountain goat trading route.

Tamang Heritage Trekking is within easy reach of Kathmandu and affords majestic views of the Langtang Himal and the Tibetan Plateau. On route, you can visit a local monastery, soak in the natural hot springs in ‘Tatopani’ and enjoy the cultural interaction with the Tamang people.

The trek begins in Syabrubesi (a 7-8 hour bus ride from Kathmandu) and then climbs to the beautiful village of Gatlang. You will pass many Buddhist Chortens and Mani walls and receive a warm welcome from the locals in their distinct colorful costumes, These villages are unspoiled and virtually untouched by culture and the trail offers you a real wilderness experience. The houses have a unique architecture and ornamental wood carvings distinguishing them from other settlements in Nepal.

You travel on to Tatopani (which literally means ‘hot water’). Here you soak in natural hot springs which the locals believe have healing properties. Then you ascend to NagthaIi Danda (3,300 m) which was the meditation place for monks and priests this is the highest pass of the area, it lies in a high open grassland and offers panoramic views of snow-covered Langtang Lirung, Kerung, Ganesh Himal, and Sanjen Ranges. You then descend to Thuman, a heavily Tibetan influenced Tamang village. If you are lucky, you might come across large troops of Nepal Gray Langur Monkeys. The ancient monasteries and houses adorned with rich wood engravings here are an unforgettable experience. Here you can choose whether to extend your trek into the Langtang Valley or finish your trek near the Nepal-Tibet border.

Amazing Trek

2013

I had an amazing Christmas and New Year thanks to Santosh. He is an incredibly knowledgeable guide who is happy to adapt the trek and program to suit you and the local events. His understanding of the ethnic groups in Nepal made my trek to the Tamang area (Tamang Heritage Trek) even more amazing and, as it was the off-season, we were welcomed into families kitchens and made to feel more like a visiting relative than a trekker passing through.

We then made our way to the magnificent Langtang valley, across the amazing Gosaikunda Pass, finishing just north of Kathmandu. Santosh then took me to Pokhara for the New Year street festival. A fantastic trip with a very professional and thoughtful guide.
