KATHMANDU - POKHARA - GHILING - MANTHANG - GHAMI - KAGBENI - JOMSOM - POKHARA - KATHMANDU

Why Upper Mustang Trek?

  • Visit caves and wide valley view including Kaligandaki River,
  • Art and culture of buddies people (Mani wall, Prayer wheels, prayer flags, painted stone with mantras)
  • Mustang traditional kingdom, and old Gompas,
  • Many yaks sheep and some wild animals.

The upper mustang trek is located in the central North of Nepal. It is one of the well-known trekking trails and it offers outstanding walking and trekking experiences in the remote part of the Annapurna trekking region.

Upper Mustang was originally a separate Buddhist kingdom called ‘Lo’ which survived until 2006. Lo used to be part of the Tibetan empire and its culture and religion are still closely tied to Tibet. The buildings are built in traditional Tibetan style with whitewashed walls and firewood stacked on the roof.

This mystical land lies in the rain shadow of Dhaulagiri, making it an excellent choice in the monsoon months and giving an arid, desolate environment with amazing multi-colored rock formations. In this barren landscape, the villages with their brightly colored fields are like an oasis. The route follows the old salt route where the Tibetans traded salt with the grain from lowland areas and the Kali Gandaki River (the deepest gorge in the world).

The Upper Mustang trek winds its way past the oldest Tibetan monastery in the world, magnificent caves that were ancient homes and temples (some still home villagers and Lamas), to the medieval capital of Mustang, Lo-Mangtang. Here you can explore the walled city with its narrow alleyways and ancient Monasteries. You can even pay a visit to the King (much respected, but no longer in power) if he is at home. Here you can learn much about Tibetan life by chatting over tea before returning to Jomsom via the towering cliffs of the Kali Gandaki.

It is a fantastic trek that offers a completely different landscape to other areas of Nepal. From the passes, you have amazing views over the Annapurna range and also Upper Mustang Trek can be easily extended to take in the sacred town of Muktinath and part of the world-famous Annapurna circuit trek. Round Annapurna treks.
